How To Add Title Tags In WordPress? Is Title Tag Important For SEO?

Title tags are automatically added by WordPress as its default feature, so you may even wonder how to add title tags in WordPress, irrespective of the WordPress itself. We all know WordPress adds title tags without user interference, so users don’t have to worry about it.

Yet there are many aspects of adding title tags to your site and articles, for instance, SEO purpose. Therefore, you must know how to add title tags in WordPress with easy methods in this situation. Therefore, today in this website guide, I will discuss everything about title tags and how you should add, edit or modify the title tags of your posts and pages.

What are the Title Tags?

The title tags of a website are the essential element for the search engine intent as well as for SEO purposes. In simple words, title tags are the title of your content/article/blog post that the visitor first encounters. For example, you can see the title tag of a particular post in the below screenshot.

For example, if you search on google “how to take down a website temporarily,” you may notice the title of my website’s post, a brief description, and the URL of the post. This title of the post is known as the title tag of the post which is automatically selected by WordPress if not adjusted by you.

Title tag vs. H1 tag

If not perceived correctly, there could be great confusion between a title tag and h1 tags; however, these could be the same. It is pretty common for users and website owners to use both as single entities. But for SEO purposes or to maintain a reasonable click-through rate, these should be treated differently.

For CTR purposes, the Title tag of a post is matters more and should be prioritized over the h1 tag. Title tags are the first impression of the post that appears on search results in the form of hyperlinks. The more attractive and clickable the title tag, the more chances of users to click through it, ultimately improving the CTR.

While on the other hand, h1 tags do not appear (usually) on the search engine but they are the 1st important heading of the webpage. This is the large heading on the webpage that tells users what this post is all about.

Why add a Title Tag?

While getting knowing how to add title tags in WordPress, you must know the importance of title tags. We all know title tags are not considered an essential SEO factor (by most bloggers), and they exclude this step.

If you do not add the title tag manually, then the h1 tag/title of the page will work as the title tag of the page, but it makes the users and the search engines confused.

H1 tags sometimes do not inherit sufficient information, which should be as a title tag, and it confuses the search engine crawlers. Consequently, that particular post loses the ranking despite good quality content.

The same thing happens when a user comes to do a particular search, and if the title is confusing, the user may not click on that post, or if clicked, he bounces back soon, which also negatively impacts the post ranking.

How to add Title Tags in WordPress?

The most common and easy method to add and edit title tags in WordPress is to use plugins. There are many popular plugins which not automatically generate title tags but optimize the title tag as well.

Some of these plugins are All in One SEO, Rank Math SEO, Yoast SEO, etc. You can use them for free, it not only optimize the titles but optimizes the whole article as well.

We will discuss only two among the plugins as these two (Yoast SEO & Rank Math SEO) are widely used for SEO purposes. You can download each of them from the WordPress plugin directory by logging in to your account.

Rank Math SEO plugin is considered the most powerful plugin in the world of search engine optimization and WordPress users. First of all, you have to install and activate Rank Math SEO in your WordPress website and then head to the post in which you want to add a title tag.

Once you click on the edit snippet, a new pop-up window appears on your screen. Here, you can add a title tag by replacing everything which already there, permalink, and description of the post that you want to appear in search results. That’s it; you have added the title tag to your post or page.

How To Add Title Tags using Yoast SEO Plugin?

Adding title tags in Rank Math SEO and Yoast SEO is almost identical (or relatively easy) except for a structural change in the interface of these two. In Yoast SEO, you don’t have to click anywhere, just open the post in which want to add a title tag, and scroll down till to the Yoast SEO section.

Inside this, you can see a preview (snippet) of your post, SEO title, slug, and meta description. In the SEO title, you can see the title, page, separator, and site title. Replace all the texts from your SEO-optimized title or what you want to display to your visitors, that’s it.
